Queen Victoria's Empire Part 1

Make sure to check your reading assignments!  You have some primaries this week.

Blog Response (Due 4/25).  Read Kipling's White Man's Burden.  How do you interpret his poem?  What does it reflect of 19th century attitudes?  How does Kipling view the subject?  Be sure to use specific evidence in support of your response.  Were such ideas unique to Europeans? (If you haven't read Letter to Queen Victoria, I suggest you do so!)

Imperialism Primary Source Exercise

Use SOAPSTone to analyze and take notes on the documents you have received.  Once you have completed this, discuss your findings/analysis with those in your group.
·        What did you find most important?
·        Did you find any information particularly surprising or interesting?
·        Do your interpretations differ from others in your group?
·        If so, how?
·        Did others focus on aspects you may have missed?

Written Response

You must develop a thesis statement and answer the question in a short essay (page) that relies on the primary source documents to support your arguments.

YOU MAY NOT WRITE ON THE DOCUMENTS!!!!
You will have 15 minutes document before you must switch folders.
